Jimmy Cliff

Jimmy Cliff ( born April 1, 1948 in St. Catherine, Jamaica as James Chambers ) is a Jamaican reggae artist who is best known for songs like " Many Rivers To Cross " from the soundtrack album "The Harder They Come " and with those of the global breakthrough of reggae music was involved.

Career

Cliffs career began even in the ska era with the song " Hurricane Hattie ," which became a hit; the song was produced by Leslie Kong, in which Cliff remained until Kong's death. Later successes include songs such as "King of Kings " and " Pride and Passion ", which were outside of Jamaica never sold well. 1964 Cliff was chosen as one of the Jamaican representatives at the World's Fair in New York. Shortly after, he signed with Iceland Records and moved to the UK. His international debut was the album " Hard Road to Travel ", which got great reviews and " Waterfall " includes a Brazilian hit, which won the " International Song Festival ".

After " Waterfall " was followed by " Wonderful World, Beautiful People" and "Vietnam", both of which are known worldwide. The protest singer Bob Dylan even "Vietnam" was the best protest song he ever heard. The album " Wonderful World " included a cover version of " Wild World " (Cat Stevens), which was very successful in 1970.

The soundtrack to " The Harder They Come " ( a reggae film, in which Cliff plays the lead role ), was a great success and sold around the world, Cliff gave but little success in the mainstream. After a series of albums, Cliff took a break and traveled to Africa and exploring his newfound Muslim faith. He quickly returned to music and went on for years on tour before he recorded in 1983 with Kool & The Gang " The Power". His song "Reggae Night" from 1983 was nominated for the 1984 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Recording and the follow-up album Cliff Hanger ( 1985) won the 1986 Grammy Award. Also for the Grammies 1987, 1989 and 1993, he was nominated in this category. In 1993, he returned with " I Can See Clearly Now" ( from the soundtrack to " Cool Runnings " ) in the U.S. charts back and his breakout album was nominated again for a Grammy. In 2005, the album Black Magic has been nominated for a Grammy. At the 55th Grammy awards in 2013, his album " Rebirth " the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album won.
