Jimmy Demaret

James Newton Demaret (* May 24, 1910; † 28 December 1983) was an American professional golfer. He won 31 tournaments on the PGA Tour in a long career between 1935 and 1957. Three wins at the Masters are his greatest success.

Origin and achievements as a professional

Demaret was founded in 1910 in Houston, Texas born the fifth of ten children. As a child he earned as many professional golfers of his era as a caddy. At age 17, he was engaged by Jackie Burke Sr. as an assistant pro at River Oaks Golf Club in Houston. One of his first tasks was the herding of Jackie Burke Jr., who was to become a great golfer than two times Major winner himself. However Demarets way should not lead directly into the professional tour it. For a time he alternated between the golf and singing in night clubs back and forth.

From 1938 he concentrated on the PGA Tour. A highly successful career with 35 victories on the PGA Tour, the 17th all-time best list began. Highlights were the three Masters victories in 1940, 1947 and 1950. 's Second place behind Ben Hogan at the U.S. Open in 1947 also led to the fact that he won the money list was in this year. Although four times reached the semifinals of the then discharged as Match Play PGA Championship, he remained here without a title.
