Jimmy Owens (musician)
James Robert " Jimmy" Owens Jr. ( born December 9, 1943 in New York City ) is an American jazz trumpeter (trumpet, flugelhorn) of Modern Jazz and Rock Jazz.
Owens began playing trumpet at the age of ten years and was later a student of Donald Byrd. 1959/60, he joined with the International Youth Band of Marshall Brown at the Newport Jazz Festival. He worked in the 1960s and Others with Slide Hampton, Lionel Hampton ( 1963-1964 ), Bobby Timmons, Hank Crawford ( 1964-1965 ), Charles Mingus ( Monterey Jazz Festival 1965), Herbie Mann (from 1966), Clark Terry ( Newport Jazz Festival 1968), Duke Ellington, Gerry Mulligan and Count Basie Big Band by Chuck Israels, the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra and the Dizzy Gillespie Reunion Band (1968), inter alia, on the Berlin Jazz Festival.
After that, he worked primarily in Europe. Later he became one of the founders of the Collective Black Artists and participated in the New York jazz Mobile project. In 1968, his album You Had Better lists with Kenny Barron, 1973 at Spectrum Billy Cobham. In the 1970s he was head of the New York Jazz Repertory Company and a member of the Big Band by David " Fathead " Newman. 1993 was involved in the album Swing Time by Pete Laroca and Joe Henderson Big Band production Shade of Jade. In 2011 he received the Jazz Masters Fellowship of the state NEA Foundation.
