Jimmy Ponder

Jimmy " Fats" Ponder ( born May 10, 1946 in Pittsburgh, † September 16, 2013 ) was an American jazz guitarist.

Life and work

Ponder began playing guitar at the age of 14 and was initially strongly influenced by Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell. At age 17, he played with Charles Earland; in the following years in the soul-jazz bands of Lou Donaldson, Houston Person, Donald Byrd, Stanley Turrentine and Jimmy McGriff. He moved to Philadelphia, and in the 1970s to New York City where he recorded a number of albums under his own name, beginning with the 1969 released album Soul Crib, attended by Charles Earland participated. 1976/77 he also recorded two albums for the label Impulse! on, Illusions and White Room. Successful was he with his album All Things Beautiful, which he recorded in 1978 for Muse Records; it reached # 98 of the jazz album charts in Billboard. His 2000 rehearsed for High Note with Don Braden and John Hicks Album Is not Misbehavin came to # 16 of the jazz charts. Ponder died in September 2013 from the effects of lung disease.
