Somerville was in the 1980s as a member of the bands Bronski Beat ( 1984-1985) and The Communards (1985-1988 ) is known. Especially his extraordinary falsetto gave the dance and synth pop groups of a particular trademark. In the texts it was primarily about homosexuality, often to leave in emotional confrontation with the physical side, and to the isolation and rejection of the younger generation of gay men in rural areas, they very often forces you to their hometowns. The song Smalltown Boy stayed in Germany for 30 weeks in the charts. Together with Bronski Beat Jimmy Somerville had the hits Why, Smalltown Boy, It Is not Necessarily So (orig. George Gershwin ) and a cover version of Donna Summer - I Feel Love - Hits, along with Marc Almond.

As of 1989, published Somerville solo records, which are also placed in the international charts. He had great success again with cover versions: You Make Me Feel ( Mighty Real) (1990 ) by Sylvester, To Love Somebody (1990 ) by the Bee Gees and It Hurts So Good ( 1995) by Millie Jackson.

In the 1990s, the pauses between his albums were getting bigger, and Manage The Damage of 1999 could no longer continue the old results. Somerville retired for several years and published in 2004 a new single called It's So Good. In Germany he was cantor at concerts by Rosenstolz. Appeared in 2005, after numerous delays, the album Home Again. On these, a version of the song But Not Tonight by Depeche Mode is included.

The album Suddenly Last Summer was released in May 2009 as a download.
