Joachim a Burck

Joachim a Burck (* 1546 in Burg, † May 24, 1610 in Mulhouse, also: Joachim von Burgk, actually Joachim Moller ) was a German composer.

Life

Burck received his musical training probably in Magdeburg. He enrolled on April 11, 1561 at the University of Wittenberg and became cantor at the 1563 Latin School and in 1566 organist at the church Divi Blasius in Mühlhausen. In the free city he founded the important musical culture that is associated with the name Johann Rudolph Ahle, Johann Eccard, Johann Georg Ahle and Johann Sebastian Bach. He also worked as a historian and public notary. In 1583 he was appointed Senator, and after his death his complete works was published to the decision of the Council.

Work

Burck is considered the pioneer of Protestant church music of the 17th century. In addition to Latin compositions such as motets, Oden, Uffizi, hymns and a passion are, above all, his German works mentioned: a St. John's Passion, in which the German Passion text was through-composed polyphonic first time, a passion to a Gospel Harmony and thirty Sacred Songs auff hard through year and German Christian ditty.
