Joachim Boldt ( born September 29, 1954) is a German anesthesiologist. He was considered one of the leading researchers in the field of colloidal infusion solutions until he was suspected of science fraud by data falsification and utter disregard for ethical standards. Boldt lost on 26 November 2010 his position as chief physician of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the Klinikum Ludwigshafen. He resigned from the German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine. His extraordinary professorship was deprived him of the Justus- Liebig- University of Giessen.

Joachim Boldt studied from 1974 to 1975 first chemistry at the Ruhr- University Bochum. In 1975, he changed the subject as well as the University and studied until 1980 medicine at the University of Marburg. His practical year (PJ) he completed 1981/1982 at the Protestant Jung-Stilling Hospital Siegen, where he then began his training in the Department of Anesthesia. In 1982 he received his doctorate at the University of Marburg. He moved in the same year as training assistant at the Department of Anesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Giessen, where in 1987 the training as a specialist in anesthesiology and intensive care medicine and completed his habilitation at the University.
He was then further and appointed as a university assistant in casting worked as Assistant Professor in 1990. 1993 awarded him the University of Giessen, the title of unscheduled professor. Because of a science scandal him the chief physician office has been withdrawn and the professor title revoked in February 2011 by the University of Giessen for inactivity in teaching.
In 2005 the public prosecutor against Giessen Boldt and colleagues had investigated for data manipulation and illegal human studies with hydroxyethyl starch ( HES). The case made headlines nationwide after a publication in the Giessen Allgemeine Zeitung. However, the allegations could not be substantiated.
About 70 professional articles had published on hydroxyethyl starch, usually with a positive evaluation of the drug Boldt. This corresponds to 0.68 % of the total literature on HES.
On 28 October 2010 the editor of the journal Anesthesia & Analgesia has a publication Joachim Boldt retracted, which was published in 2009. After doubts about the correctness of the data, a scientific commission came to the conclusion that there is no convincing evidence that the publication of the underlying study was conducted.
The editors of 16 international journals withdrew numerous other publications Boldt, after an analysis of the State Medical Association of Rhineland- Palatinate had revealed that in 89 of a total of 102 studies, no approval of the ethics committees was detectable. The Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland will therefore review its guidelines, as six obtained from a total of 142 footnotes in the Guidelines on Intravenous Fluid Therapy for Adult Surgical Patients ( GIFTASUP ) on the work of Boldt. However, the Bureau of the German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine presented yet on February 21, 2011 in a statement that " the clinical use of hESCs are not currently being re-evaluated must " because Boldt neither approval studies or to studies in the emergency and intensive care would have been involved.
The German Medical Association has the section 5, withdrawn the current cross-sectional guidelines for therapy with blood components and plasma derivatives for treatment recommendations with human albumin, the Boldt had written for revision.
From the AWMF S3 guideline intensive medical care of cardiac surgery patients - Hemodynamic monitoring and cardiovascular therapy 14 publications were removed after the state medical association of Rhineland -Palatinate was announced after an analysis that in 89 of a total of 102 studies of the group of authors to Boldt no approval of the ethics committees has been submitted.
Based on recent studies on the risk-benefit ratio of Pharmakovigilanzausschuss for risk assessment recommended ( Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee, PRAC ) of the European Medicines Agency ( European Medicines Agency) on June 14, 2013 even included the revocation of the marketing authorization for products that hydroxyethyl starch.
The affair of Joachim Boldt found a great international attention and was referred to as the greatest scientific scandal since the fall of Wakefield. An independent commission of inquiry confirmed in its final report published on August 8, 2012, the serious allegations.
As a further consequence in the " Boldt complex" the Justus -Liebig- University Giessen withdrew in January 2013 in two cases doctoral degrees. A communication from the University said: " In both the former Boldt - doctoral P. as well as the concerned doctor T. is the doctoral committee after a thorough examination assume that has been violated and deceived against the principles for safeguarding good scientific practice. " by judgment of 15 October 2013 ( AZ 3 K 1293/12 ), the administrative court casting promotion deprivation in the case of a doctor T. picked up again. However, the judgment is not yet final.
