Joachim Deschler

Joachim Deschler ( occasionally Joachim Teschler, because of errors of Neudörfer Johann Teschler; * 1500, † after October 1, 1571 in Vienna ) was a German sculptor and medalist.

Little is known about the life Deschlers. The books of St. Lawrence testify that he in 1532 in Nuremberg entered his first marriage and was married from 1537 to his second wife the widow of the painter Nicholas Glockendon book. On May 8, 1537 Deschler was also in Nuremberg civil rights. Im not into more detail accrued period 1533-1547 he stayed to study for two years in Italy, probably mainly in Venice and Rome. From this trip he returned with many drawings and sketches. His first relationship with the Archduke Maximilian, later Emperor Maximilian II, dated from the year 1543. 1554, at the marriage of a daughter from his first marriage with the Reckoner, Michel Wolff, he still lived in Nuremberg. However, towards the end of the fifties he moved to Vienna, where he Maximilian in 1564 to the imperial court sculptor ( " pilthauer and conterfetter in stain" ) convened. His last fixed salary he accepted on 1 October 1571 is therefore believed that he died in late 1571.

From Deschlers workshop small sculptures originate from limestone and boxwood in the style of the German High Renaissance, such as " a rondes Contra Fait of Albrecht Dürer ". He is also known for a number of artistically executed cast medals which he used to sign the arm portion of the depicted persons each with the letters I and D. Among them are located next to several rulers ( Ferdinand I, Otto Heinrich Melchior Zobel of Giebelstadt ) and individuals ( Hieronymus Baumgartner and other personalities from Nuremberg, Lower Franconia, Augsburg and Vienna). The coats of arms on the reverse sides of the medals show that them was the basis of Solnhofen stone models. Deschlers work is heavily influenced by Italian masters, but reveal a German artist in his genre-like ingredients. In addition to Hans Bolsterer he is one of the most important medalists of his time.
