Joachim

St. Joachim was, according to several apocryphal Gospels of the 2nd to the 6th century, the father of Mary and thus grandfather of Jesus Christ.

Genealogy and Tradition

In the Catholic and Orthodox tradition of the holy Joachim applies (Hebrew: Jehoiakim ) as the husband of Anna and father of Mary, the mother of Jesus; it is therefore referred to with the title " ancestor of God." In the Koran it is called ' Imraan.

According to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church of Mary was begotten by the eternal plan of God free from any original sin, which only allowed the birth of Jesus.

The canonical Gospels in the New Testament does not explicitly mention Mary's parents, but it is argued that the genealogy in Luke 3 rather than that of Mary of Joseph, which is why her father is called Eli. Catholic and Orthodox theologians argue, " Eli " could be short for " Eliakim ", which is similar to " Jehoiakim " or " Joachim". The story of Joachim and Anna also comes from the apocryphal Protevangelium of James.

Joachim is described as a rich and pious man who donates to the poor and to the temple regularly. However, since his wife is barren, rejects the high priest Joachim and his sacrifice, the childlessness of his wife is interpreted by them as a sign of divine disfavor. Joachim then runs into the desert, where he fasts for 40 days and repent. An angel appears to both Anna and Joachim and announces them to the birth of a child. Joachim returns to Jerusalem and embraced Anne at the entrance to the temple of Jerusalem, the Golden Gate. The Promised Child Mary is born.

The cycle of legends of Joachim and Anne were included in the Golden Legend and remained popular in Christian art until the Council of Trent, which restricted the depiction of apocryphal events. The Memorial of St. Joachim was formerly celebrated on August 16, since the Second Vatican Council, he is, however, committed in the Roman Catholic Church, together with Saint Anne on July 26.

Joachim is the patron saint of fathers and grandfathers and the town of Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. His attributes are a shovel and sacrificial animals (lamb or pigeon ). Often it is with St.. Anna or the Virgin Mary depicted.

He is patron of San Gioacchino (Palermo ) Church.
