Joan of France, Duchess of Berry

Jeanne de Valois ( German: Joan of Valois; * April 23, 1464; † February 4, 1505 in Bourges ) was the daughter of Louis XI. of France and his second wife Charlotte of Savoy. Other names and titles were St. Joan, abbess of Bourges, Duchess of Orléans, Queen of France.

Life

Jeanne was married on September 8, 1476 with her distant cousin, and later King of France Louis d' Orléans. The marriage remained childless and was born on December 17, 1498 in an extremely humiliating for her process after the accession of her husband as Louis XII. annulled ( after 22 years ). But you received as compensation the Duchy of Berry.

Johanna retired to her castle in Bourges on 15 March 1499 and ruled her duchy. 1501 she founded the contemplative orders of Annuntiatinnen or of the ten virtues of the Virgin Mary, which she joined in 1504. After her profession, she took the name Maria Gabriela.

1743 Joan was beatified by Pope Benedict XIV and on 28 May 1950 by Pope Pius XII. canonized. It is the only canonized Queen of France ( name- February 4 ).
