Joan of The Tower

Joan Plantagenet, Princess of England, called Joan of the Tower (* July 5, 1321 at the Tower of London; † September 7, 1362 in Hertford Castle, Hertfordshire) was by marriage Queen of Scotland from 1331 to 1362.

Life

Johanna was the youngest daughter of the English king Edward II (1284-1327) and his wife Princess Isabella of France (1292-1358), only daughter of King Philip IV and Queen Joan I of Navarre. Your paternal grandparents were King Edward I and his wife, Princess Eleanor of Castile.

With the treaty of Edinburgh and Northampton England in 1328 recognized the independence of Scotland and the claim of King Robert I. to the Scottish throne. After the Battle of Neville 's Cross King David II was in English captivity, which lasted eleven years on 17 October 1346. In the meantime, ruled in the name of Queen Joan of Scotland. His captivity was not too rigorous and the negotiations for the release started shortly thereafter. But it was only in October 1357 after numerous interruptions, an agreement was signed in Berwick -upon- Tweed. The Scots undertook to pay a ransom for their king. Queen Joan died on September 7, 1362 at Hertford Castle, Hertfordshire and was buried in London in Christ Church Greyfriars.
