Joanna la Beltraneja

Joanna of Castile ( Juana la Beltraneja called (in Spanish ) and Joana a Beltraneja in Portuguese) (* 1462 in Madrid, † 1530 in Lisbon ) was Princess of Castile and 1475-1481 Queen of Portugal.

Johanna was the daughter of King Henry IV and Joan of Portugal, daughter of King Edward I of Portugal, born. Your nickname la Beltraneja stems from the fact that her true father, according to a rumor not King Henry, but the nobleman Beltrán de la Cueva was. As Queen of Portugal it was known as " the noble lady " (a Excelente Senhora ).

Since she was the only child of Henry, she was the likely heir to the Kingdom of Castile. Resistance from the nobility and the open question of paternity, however, led to the fact that Henry had to cancel his marriage to Joan of Portugal later, whereby the succession passed to Henry's half-sister Isabella ( later Isabella I ) went over.

1475 she married King Alfonso V and was up to his death in 1481, Queen of Portugal ( as a wife, not as regent in its own right ). The primary closed for political reasons marriage was because of the close relationship (Alfons was her uncle) by Pope Sixtus IV canceled and remained childless. In Castilian succession dispute after the death of Henry IV Alfonso tried unsuccessfully to enforce its claim militarily. The Treaty of Alcaçovas ( 1479 ) Johanna had to give up their claim to the throne and retired in 1480 at the Monastery of Santa Clara de Coimbra back. From 1493 she lived in Lisbon, where she died in 1530.

Joanna of Castile is not to be confused with Joanna of Castile, the " madman ", the daughter of Isabella I and wife of Philip the Fair, which was 1504-1555 Queen of Castile.
