Joannis Avramidis

Joannis Avramidis ( Ιωάννης Αβραμίδης, born September 23, 1922 in Batumi, Georgia) is a contemporary Greek -Austrian sculptor.

Life and work

Joannis Avramidis was born the son of Pontian Greeks in Batumi (USSR), the persecution and the death of his father in prison forced the family in 1939 to emigrate to Greece. Joannis Avramidis had to stop at the Art Academy of Batumi in 1937 begun his studies. 1943, Avramidis as a foreign worker to Vienna, studied from 1945 to 1949 painting at the Academy and from 1953 to 1956 sculpture with Robin Christian Andersen and Fritz Wotruba.

In the late 1950s he was a noted artist, derived from the human body, he created abstract figures. He represented Austria at the Venice Biennale in 1962. 1965 / 66 he taught at the Vienna Academy, where until 1992 he worked as a professor in 1968. 1966/67, he was professor in Hamburg. Among his students is one among others Reinhard Puch.

Avramidis was the sculptor and poet Anne Marie Avramidis (1940-2013) married.
