Jochen Bachfeld

Jochen Bachfeld ( born December 17, 1952 in Sülte ) is a retired German boxer. He was Olympic champion in 1976 in Montreal welterweight.

Career

Jochen Bachfeld began as a teenager at SC Traktor Schwerin with the boxes. There he was trained by coach Paul nickel to a world-class boxer. Jochen Bachfeld was an outstanding technician and stylist. In 1970, his international career began. He finished at the Junior European Championships in Miskolc in the light flyweight ( up to 48 kg body weight) with wins over Arif Dogu, Turkey, Enrique Cal Rodríguez, Spain and Georgi Kostadinov, Bulgaria and one defeat in the final against Hungary Peter Gluck an excellent second place.

1972 won Jochen Bachfeld his first GDR Champion title in the senior featherweight before Hartmut Helmbold of the SG bismuth Gera and his club colleague Norbert Warnke. In the same year he was sent winner of the Chemistry Cup in Halle featherweight and then to the Olympic Games in Munich. In Munich, he won in the first round of Peter Prause of the Federal Republic of Germany on points and also won his second fight against William Taylor from the UK. But In the second round he lost to Gabriel Pometcu from Romania and was eliminated without medal. After the Olympics, he competed in Gera still at an international match against Romania and East Germany was defeated here at lightweight against Simion Cuţov on points. In the following years Jochen Bachfeld was its unusual boxing skills were undisputed, very carefully constructed or used by the person in charge of the boxing federation of the GDR because of an already suggestive susceptibility to injury.

In 1973, he did not start for example at the East German championship, but was at the Berliner TSC tournament here and won this tournament in the lightweight ( up to 60 kg body weight) by a point victory over the Soviet athlete V. Bilijew. In an international match against Poland in East Berlin, he won the lightweight also Ryszard Tomczyk.

In 1974, he was absent from the GDR championship again, but was still used in the inaugural World Amateur Championship in Havana. He had the misfortune to meet in the lightweight straight to the Soviet Favorites Vasily Solomin there and had to be taken in the first round out of the ring against this. Solomin then also became world champion. In the same year Jochen Bachfeld had in countries fight against Poland GDR in Poznan against Bogdan Jakubowski a knockout loss in the second round plug.

In 1976, became the great year of Jochen Bach field. He won his second welterweight first GDR Champion title by one point victory in the final over Peter Spilski the SC Dynamo Berlin. Then he won the 16th Honved Cup in Budapest welterweight ( up to 67 kg body weight) with a victory in the final battle Zbigniew Kicka from Poland. Just in time recovered from his injury, Jochen Bachfeld won just before the Olympic Games, an international tournament in Gera and was re-nominated for the Olympic team.

In Montreal, Jochen Bachfeld won in the first round via Ali Bahri Khomani from Iran by discontinuation due to great superiority in the first round. In his next fight, he defeated Athannasos Iliadis from Greece on points. In the second round he defeated Valery Ratschkow from the Soviet Union 4-1 judges' votes on points and also won his quarter- final bout against Canadian Carmen Rinke sure on points. In the semifinals against Viktor Zilbermann from Romania and in the final against Pedro Gamarro from Venezuela Jochen Bachfeld had but luck. Both fights he won 3-2 judges' votes and became the Olympic champion.

In 1977 Jochen Bachfeld hardly occurred in appearance. But he was back at the 1978 World Cup in Belgrade in the welterweight division at the start. In Belgrade he won in a first round fight over Joash Kitui in Kenya by KO in the second round, but lost in the second round against Valeri Ratschkow with 2:3 judges' votes.

In 1979 Jochen Bachfeld won in an international fight against Uganda in East Germany Schwerin John Mugabi, who later became professional world champion on points.

Towards the end of 1979 ended Jochen Bach field because of its susceptibility to injury his career as a boxer. He completed a total of 119 fights with 109 victories. He then worked as a branch manager in a factory in Schwerin and was named after the political change in the GDR as a hotelier. He is a board member of the BSC Schwerin.

He now works in the Helios Kliniken Schwerin as a sports therapist for patients.
