Joditz is a village in Upper Franconia, community Köditz, county court.

Location and data

Joditz lies in the valley of the Saale River, ten kilometers north-west of the yard. The village has 345 inhabitants (as of January 2010) and has a parish church and a cemetery. In the area of ​​parish includes the hamlets of Joditz, Lamitz, Saalenstein, nicks, Stöckaten and Siebenhitz.

History and Culture

In the center of the town is the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John. It was first mentioned in 1365, and was appointed in 1561 to a separate parish. The present church was built in 1704 on the foundations of a previous building older than Patronatskirche of Freiherr vom Stein in the style of a hall church. Pulpit, altar, organ case and baptismal ( the latter no longer exists ) come from the Hofer sculptor Johann Knoll. The panel of the altar depicts the birth of Christ; it is flanked by the statues of Moses and John the Baptist. Crowning is the altar of three putti with the coat of arms of the former patronage families. The pulpit adorn the figures of the four evangelists. Joditz was the childhood home of the 1763 born in Wunsiedel poet Jean Paul, whose father was the pastor from 1765 to 1776. The Jean Paul Museum in Joditz holds the memory of the poet and his time spent in Upper Franconia childhood years.
