Jōdo Shinshū

Jōdo Shinshu (Japanese净土 真宗, dt True School of the Pure Land ), also briefly Shinshu or Shin is known as one of the four new Buddhist schools of the Kamakura period and after the schools of Nichiren Buddhism today the second largest denomination of the Japanese Buddhism. It was founded by Shinran Shonin (1173-1263), later it was of Rennyo Shonin (1415-1499) further trained.

Teaching

The school is based on the Sukhâvatîvyuûhasûtra (Jap. Amida阿 弥陀 経- kyō ), the Sutra of the Land of Bliss. She is the Amidism belonging. In the center of their teaching trust in the transcendent Buddha Amitabha (Japanese Amida阿 弥陀) and hope for a rebirth in his " Pure Land " is (iodo ).

Shinran thinking highly of his understanding of Mappo (末法) was affected, which he sees as an age of decline of Dharma ( Buddha's teachings ). Shinran is the belief that for most people this time there is no hope to get out of its own resources (自力Jiriki ) from the painful cycle of birth and death to free. For Shinran all efforts to achieve enlightenment, or the Bodhisattva ideal were to realize only an expression of the blindness that comes from the ego- illusion. In view of the involvement in unwholesome thoughts, speech and action (烦 悩Bonno ) is the vast majority of people, a liberation from samsara ( painful cycle of existence ) impossible: Shinran: "Hell is my only destination. " Trust but on the other power (他 力Taraki ), the power of Amida Buddha's boundless compassion in his original vow to lead all beings to liberation, manifests itself, transforms the offered hopelessness in the assurance of perfect liberation ( " Even the good is delivered, how much more of evil "). If this trust (信心Shinjin ) realizes in his heart, the is certainly the sublatedness in the Pure Land. Since nothing can be done by individuals, because everything is already done, knows Jōdo Shinshu no practice, as we know from other Buddhist schools. Even the Nembutsu practice (念佛Nembutsu ), the frequent exclamations of Namu Amida Butsu (南 无 阿 弥陀 仏, dt Homage to Amida Buddha! ), Which is seen in other Pure Land schools as a meritorious act, has no influence on the act of liberation, but is only an expression of gratitude for the assurance of liberation by Amida.

Who can be detected by the other power of Amida fully realized Shinjin. Shinjin rooted in Jinen (自然, natural spontaneous action of the original vow ) and can be realized only through devotion. Amida's infinite light transfigured the karmic evil of countless rebirths of past and transforms them into good karma. The bright so of Amida example Turned irretrievably into a Pure Land and returns as a bodhisattva back into the world to liberate all beings. Thus, and by his understanding of emptiness and non-duality is Jodo Shinshu within the Mahayana tradition, despite all the differences with the other manifestations of the " Great Vehicle ".

Teaching default is close to the Jodo Shinshu school, her mother, the Jōdo shū very. Also the founder of the Jōdo shū, honing Shonin is highly regarded as a teacher of Shinran.
