The Vik Records, he then got a record deal, his first publication, as written by Rudy Grayzell Duck Tail and Sixteen Chicks, as well as subsequent singles were unheeded. Also an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show could not bring the desired breakthrough, instead played Clay as a background musician for Elvis Presley. The next 30 years he played in the evening in New Orleans ' bars, during the day he worked as a bus driver. During the 1980s, Clay gained unexpected fame in Europe, of which he knew nothing, however. Willie Jeffrey finally persuaded him to take a tour.

Joe Clay is next to rockabilly legends such as Sleepy LaBeef or Sonny West one of the few singers who still occur today.
