Joe Handley

Joseph ( "Joe" ) Handley ( born August 9, 1943 in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian politician and educator. He was on 10 December 2003 to October 16, 2007 Prime Minister of Northwest Territories.

Handley worked after graduation as a teacher at various schools in the province of Saskatchewan. Later, he was an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia and the University of Manitoba as well as a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. 1985 Handley moved to the Northwest Territories and was appointed by the Government to Vice Minister, education, later in the fields of renewable resources, nature conservation and economic development.

In February 1999, Handley was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories and represented the constituency Weledeh which includes part of the city of Yellowknife. From 2000, he was Minister of Finance from 2001 additionally Minister for Transport and is responsible for the state electricity company Northwest Territories Power Corporation.

Following the resignation of Stephen Kakfwi the deputies of the Legislative Assembly Handley voted on 10 December 2003 the new Prime Minister ( in the Northwest Territories, there are no political parties, only independent politician). In addition, he headed the ministries of the concerns of the Native and Foreign Relations. In 2004 he presented a strategic plan for the Northwest Territories. This provides long-term, to gain full ownership of the federal government control over the exploitation of natural resources. Handley decided not to seek re-election and resigned on 16 October 2007.
