Joe McPhee

Joe McPhee ( born November 3, 1939 in Miami, Florida) is an African-American jazz musicians. He plays trumpet, trombone, and various saxophones.

Life and work

Joe McPhee played just eight trumpet when he was taught by his father. Later he played in high school band and during his U.S. Army time in Germany in a military band. His career began in the 1960s, among others, in ensembles of Don Cherry. His first gramophone recording was created in 1967 with Clifford Thornton, " Freedom and Unity ". From the late 1960s he took on Craig Johnson's CJR label a series of albums, such as " Underground Railroad " in 1969, "Nation Time" in 1970, "Trinity" in 1971 and "Pieces of Light" 1974.

From the mid- 1970s, he became known for a series of sensational recordings in Europe, which started the Swiss label HatHut Records by Werner X. Uehlinger with him, as the album " Tenor " in 1976. During this time McPhee lived in Europe and worked with a native of Marseille guitarist Raymond Boni and saxophonist André Jaume together who participated on his albums " Old Eyes & Mysteries" (1979/1980) and " Topology " (1991). In 1991, together the album " Impressions of Jimmy Giuffre "

Since the 1990s, McPhee worked in various collaborations with the younger generation of musicians from Chicago and recorded a number of albums for the avant-garde label CIMP. He has played with musicians such as Frank Lowe, Dominic Duval, Jay Rosen, Ken Vandermark, Peter Brötzmann and Evan Parker. By 2007, he has published some 100 recordings recordings under his name. Currently, he is with Fred Lonberg -Holm on cello and Michael Zerang on percussion, the trio Survival Unit.

Along with Roy Campbell, William Parker and Warren Smith, he plays in the project A Tribute to Albert Ayler.
