Joe Newman (trumpeter)

Joseph Dwight "Joe" Newman ( born September 7, 1922 in New Orleans, Louisiana; † July 4, 1992 in New York City, New York ) was an American jazz trumpeter, known as long-standing member of the Count Basie Orchestra in particular in the 1950s.

Life

Joe Newman was born into a musical family (his father was the jazz pianist Dwight Newman (1902 - 1942) ), learned from 6 years and had trumpet from age 8 first gigs, including with Papa Celestins Tuxedo Orchestra. On the Alabama State Teachers College, he led even the school band that played at dances and so occupied for school money. His models were initially Louis Armstrong, then - excited by the Basie band of the 1930s - Buck Clayton and Sweets Edison. But when you praised him, he would like Sweets Edison sound, he sought his own way. 1941 to 1943 he played in the big band of Lionel Hampton and then from 1943 to 1947 in the Count Basie Orchestra, which was fulfilled a heartfelt wish for him. Jo Jones invited him to New York to stand in for the currently contracted Buck Clayton, for which he was immediately ready despite cold and let fly his involvement in Hampton. Here he also met another example, Lester Young, whose saxophone solos on the trumpet he nachspielte (even as a child he wanted to first learn saxophone). He then played in the combo of Illinois Jacquet (which originally only consisted of the two of them and a rhythm section was that they engaged in each venue ) and JC Heard before it from 1952 to 1961 again joined the Count Basie band, where he, together with Thad Jones was employed as a soloist. During this time he also took much under his own name, eg for RCA. His composition "The Midgets " (which he for himself and Frank Wess on flute wrote ), had its name from a humorous subdivision of Birdland star band by Lester Young in case Grown ( " Bombers " and " Midgets ", which for fun even small battles delivered ). In 1956 he participated in Big Joe Turner Atlantic album Boss of the Blues.

In 1962 he participated in Benny Goodman's tour in part by the Soviet Union and worked as a freelancer in New York. In 1968 he recorded the album O Sing to the Lord, together with his quintet and the " jazz priest " John Gensel. A New Song on.

For the non-profit organization "Jazz Interactions", whose founder he which he was president in 1965 and 1967, he organized and gave jazz lessons for young people ( eg master classes in schools). She also later own big band for which he composed music for Pops. At times, he also conducted workshops with Billy Taylor's Jazz Mobile. In 1972 he took part in jam sessions of the Newport Jazz Festival, which took place at that time in New York. Newman also toured with Benny Carter, participated in international festivals and took on 1984 plates at Concord. In 1991 he suffered a stroke that paralyzed him partially.
