Joe Orton

Joe Orton ( born January 1, 1933, Leicester, † August 9, 1967 in London) was a British playwright.

Life

Orton came from working class backgrounds. From 1950 to 1953 he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He earned his livelihood, among others, as a nude model. In 1963, he was serving a prison sentence for the theft of library property and its defilement with obscenities. Orton had written before his international success in the theater along with his partner Kenneth Halliwell stories without reaching publications during his lifetime. Halliwell could not bear the sole success of his life partner, and killed him on August 9, 1967.

Orton, who would often break taboos of the time in his few pieces only wrote over a period of three years for the theater. His life was made ​​into a film in 1987 by Stephen Frears.
