Joe Perry (musician)

Joe Perry, full name: Anthony Joseph Perry ( born September 10, 1950 in Lawrence, Massachusetts) is an American musician. He is the lead guitarist, vocalist and songwriter of the second rock band Aerosmith. In the early 1980s he had with his 5 -year-old Aerosmith break his own band. Furthermore, he brought in 2005 a solo album. He is of Portuguese and Italian descent, is married and has four children. In 2008, he underwent surgery on his knee, so he had to cancel an appearance.

The time before Aerosmith

First came into contact with rock and roll had Perry in childhood, as he early rock gems such as Rock Around the Clock or Tutti Frutti heard a neighbor. Inspired by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones in the 60s, he discovered as a teenager to play the guitar. He was jamming to British blues rockers like the Yardbirds and John Mayall. This formed the basis of his " Tough'n'Rough Blues Licks " which should have a major role in the success of Aerosmith later.

He played in many bands such as Flash, Just Us and Plastic Glass. In The Jam Band, he played together already with the future Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton. In 1969 crossed the paths of Joe Perry and Steven Tyler in Sunapee, New Hampshire.

Aerosmith, the first

Founded in 1969, Joe Perry (guitar), Steven Tyler (vocals, drums) and Tom Hamilton ( bass), the band Aerosmith. A little later the band with Brad Whitford (guitar) and Joey Kramer (drums, which replaced Tyler's drum part ) completes.

Tyler Perry and a close friendship and they became known very soon because of their drug use and excessive lifestyle as "Toxic Twins" ( Toxic Twins).

The first album Aerosmith appeared in 1973. Initially seen as Rolling Stones rip-off, the band proved the mid-1970s their own style. Aerosmith brought out a series of successful albums and hit singles during this period.

The success made Perry an icon. However, with time the band got in a creative and personnel increasingly in a crisis.

Perry left Aerosmith in 1979 after an argument with Tyler, just as the sixth album Night in the Ruts was taken. Joe plays therefore only six out of nine titles.

Joe Perry Project: The own band

In late 1979, Perry formed his own band " The Joe Perry Project". The debut album Let the Music Do the Talking made ​​it to number 47 on the Billboard album chart with 250,000 sold discs in the USA.

Merchandise sales and reviews by quite considerable, so the band had their success primarily as a live band. That they managed even after the second album I've Got the Rock'n'Roll Again largely flopped.

The project never made a solid cast. All three studio albums had different lead singer. For the 1983 third and last album Once a Rocker, Always a Rocker, the entire ensemble was replaced again.

It was a not a true success more. Even a brief debut of former or future again Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford earned the band any more. The Joe Perry Project 1984 was hardly the support of a record label.

Aerosmith, the Second

The Aerosmith manager Tim Collins worked out that Perry is coming back into contact with his former bandmates. Finally, in 1984 he joined the band again in a - as well as the equally solo career changing Brad Whitford. Thus, the classic cast of Aerosmith was restored, it was followed by a successful reunion tour.

With rappers Run DMC and Tyler Perry created in 1986 a remake of the 1975 Aerosmith hit Walk This Way. This brought the band again the attention of the general public.

Perry has his creative proportion of Aerosmith's first number one hit I Do not Want to Miss a Thing by songwriter Diane Warren. The song was released in 1998 on the soundtrack to the film Armageddon.

2001 Aerosmith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The solo album and Joe Perry Project Reunion

In May 2005, Joe released his first real solo album Joe Perry. It was recorded in his home studio The Boneyard. Perry played all the instruments himself, except drums. The album was eagerly awaited by the fans, which Perry's classic rock vein missing in the last Aerosmith songs. The music critics also reacted positive: Rolling Stone magazine ranked 3.5 out of 5 stars and noting "A Joe Perry solo joint? About time! " ( A Joe Perry solo joint? But that was about time ).
