Joe Schleimer

Joseph "Joe" Schleimer ( born May 31, 1909 in Mississauga, Ontario, † November 23, 1988 ) was a Canadian wrestler. He won at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, a bronze medal in the free style welterweight

Career

Joe Schleimer was the descendant of a German-born immigrants of the ethnic group of the Gottscheers in Canada, who came from the Lower Carniola in Slovenia. He attended high school and began in Toronto at the Association of Christian Young Men ( YMCA ) with the rings. He concentrated on the then customary in Canada free style.

In 1934 he took part in the British Empire Games and won there welterweight before William Fox from England and Rashid Anwar from India.

In 1936, he represented Canada at the Olympic Games in Berlin. He started back in the welterweight and arrived there in his first fight to a victory over Anwar Rashid from India. Then he lost to Frank Lewis from the United States and triumphed over Julian Beke of Belgium and Willy fear from Switzerland. In his last fight he lost against Thure Andersson from Sweden. With these results, he won the Olympic bronze medal.

These two international championships were the only ones in which he participated. However, it must be remembered that at that time there were no world championships and international competition program was by far not as extensive as it is today.

After his playing days, Joe Schleimer operated as a wrestler coaches at the YMCA in Toronto.
