Joe Ward (boxer)

Joe Ward, actually Joseph Ward (born 30 October 1993 in Moate, Westmeath, Ireland) is an Irish boxer. Ward was the winner of the European Championships in 2011 and bronze medalist of the World Championships 2013.

Career

Joe Ward began as a child when Moate Boxing Club, which he is today, with the boxes. In the student area ( U15 ) he was in 2007 in Portsmouth Vice European Featherweight Champion ( -56 kg ) and in the youth field ( U17) 2008 at welterweight ( -63 kg ) bronze medalist at the European Championships in Plovdiv and 2009 in the light middleweight (-70 kg) champion in Erevan. 2010 Ward was in Baku ( -75 kg ) junior world champion at middleweight.

From 2011 starts Joe Ward for men. In this he succeeded at the first Irish Championship in March this year a great success, for he defeated in the final of that tournament 's ten years older and far more experienced opponent, the silver medalist of the Olympic Games in Beijing Kenneth Egan on points ( 11-6 ) and became Irish champion. In June 2011, he continued his winning streak, because he was at the European Championships in Ankara Light Heavyweight ( -81 kg ) at the age of 18 years, the new European Champion. Towards this title he defeated Ainar Karlsson from Estonia ( 10:7 ), Simone Fiori, Italy ( 15:13 ), Imre Szello, Hungary ( 18:8 ) and in the final Nikita Ivanov, Russia ( 20:12 ) to points. The world championships in the same year for Ward ended in disappointment. After a first round victory in the second round he lost narrowly to Ehsan Rouzbahani, Iran ( 15:15 ). Also the European Olympic Qualification Tournament 2012 in Trabzon ended for Ward ahead of schedule with a defeat against Bahram Muzaffer, Turkey ( 18:15), so that he could not attend the 2012 Olympics in London.

Ward retired in 2013, although at the European Championships in Minsk in the first fight out but then reached at the World Championships in Almaty, the semi-final, which he lost 3-0 judges' votes against Cuban Julio Cesar La Cruz, and thus won the bronze medal.

World Series of Boxing

In the 2012/2013 season, Joe Ward fought for the British Lionhearts in the World Series of Boxing. In the group stage, he won four of five fights. In the quarterfinals of the playoffs Ward won against Christian Demaj of the Mexico Guerreros, so that the resignation of his Boxstaffel but could not prevent.
