Joe Wilder

Joseph Benjamin "Joe" Wilder ( born February 22, 1922 in Colwyn, Pennsylvania) is an American jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player of the bebop and hard bop.

Life

Born the son of an orchestra conductor, Wilder studied at the mast School of Music, along with Buddy DeFranco and Red Rodney. He began his musical career alongside Dizzy Gillespie in the Les Hite band 1941/42, Lionel Hampton 1942/43, and again after military service 1945 /46. After that he played in the Jimmie Lunceford band, Lucky Millinder, Sam Donahue, Herbie Fields, Noble Sissle, and - apart from a brief stint in the Count Basie band in 1954 - in Broadway orchestras, in such musical productions such as Guys and Dolls and Silk Stockings. He then worked as a studio musician on ABC in New York and in symphony orchestras. Fall at this time that the two albums under his own name, Wild 'N' Wild at Savoy Records in 1955, and The Pretty Sound (1959).

In the late 1950s and 1960s, Wilder worked on various studio and big band productions, as with George Russell, Oscar Pettiford, Oliver Nelson, Quincy Jones, Tadd Dameron, Gil Evans and Johnny Carisi, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Smith, Michel Legrand, John Lewis, Tom Talbert and Cab Calloway. In 1962 he accompanied Benny Goodman on his USSR tour, on which he featured in the documentary Jazz for the Russians - reported To Russia with Jazz. After Wilder played in symphony orchestras such as the Orchestra Symphony of the New World 1965-71 and 1975 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1971 he was involved in the big band production Let My Children Hear Music by Charles Mingus. In addition, he contributed to recordings by Roberta Flack, Tony Bennett, Terry Gibbs and Joe Newman. After 1972, he became a regular on the Colorado Jazz Party in All-Star formations.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Joe Wilder played frequently with at board sessions by musicians from the jazz mainstream, like Benny Carter, John Coliani, Rebecca Kilgare, The Heath Brothers, Charlie Byrd, Ruby Braff, Ken Peplowski and Joe Newman. In 1996 he was involved in the big band production by Jay Jay Johnson, The Brass Orchestra.

Joe Wilder recalls his behavior flowing style of play and his warm, substance rich sound especially at Harry Sweets Edison and commandeth sovereign over means of expression, ranging from Growl to classic vibrato. His solo in the title Softly With Feeling with the Count Basie Orchestra from 1954 is a particularly fine example of his peculiar style.

In 2008 he received the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship.
