Joel Dorn

Joel Dorn ( born April 7, 1942 in Yeadon, Pennsylvania, † December 17, 2007 in New York City ) was an American jazz and R & B music producer and record label founder.

Life and work

Joel Dorn worked 1967-1974 for Atlantic Records, for which he alone 15 albums of jazz musician Rahsaan Roland Kirk produced, among others, and 32 Jazz; Label M, and Hyena Records labels, which he founded. He called himself " The Masked Announcer " ( the masked announcer ).

Joel Dorn won several Grammy Awards, including:

  • "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack in 1972 Record of the Year.
  • "Killing Me Softly With His Song" by Roberta Flack in 1974 Record of the Year.

As to his own label Hyena Records, he released earlier recordings successful jazz musicians, such as Kenny Barron, Bobby Hutcherson, Mulgrew Miller and many others.

Dorn died of a heart attack. He is survived by three sons. His son, Adam Dorn, known under the pseudonym Mocean Worker, has been active as a jazz musician and producer.
