Joel of Dotawo

Joel was a king of the Christian Nubian kingdom of Dotawo, who reigned around 1485.

Joel is one of the last safe occupied Nubian - Christian kings at all. He appears in a graffito in the Cathedral of Faras, in an inscription in the church of Tamit, in a letter dated 1484 from Gebel Adda, and in an inscription in an ancient Egyptian, later converted to a church temple near this place. The relatively high number of received inscriptions seems remarkable, especially since it dated to a time shortly before the Christian kingdoms in Nubia disappeared. Joel certainly seems to have had some meaning, and it is reported that he has at least one among them had Vassallenkönig: King Tienossi of Ilenat.
