Joel Schumacher

Joel Schumacher ( born August 29, 1939 in New York City, USA) is an American film director, screenwriter and producer.

Life

Schumacher was born in New York City and studied at the Parsons School of Design. Initially working in the fashion industry, he began his media work as a fashion designer and developed his style in the television industry. He wrote screenplays for the movie Car Wash - The freaky Launderette (1976 ) and a number of less successful films. He also wrote the script for The Wiz - The Wizard of Oz ( 1978).

Director

He made his directorial debut with The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981 ) with Lily Tomlin, and it was quickly followed by further successes; these included three Brat Pack movies. With solid work and a growing reputation he got his first big budget, when he took over the rights for Batman by Tim Burton. Batman Forever (1995 ) was a summer hit, the sequel Batman & Robin ( 1997) indeed has a worldwide box office earnings of $ 238 million (cost 125 million), but fell by most critics and fans through. The announced fifth film in the Batman series was canceled and Schumacher returned largely back to less ambitious projects.

In 2004, he created with luxurious features the film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. His last film Trespass from 2011 played only $ 24,000, and $ 6 million in worldwide about production costs of 35 million U.S. dollars in the American cinema.

Schumacher also filmed two novels by John Grisham, The Client ( 1994) and The Jury ( 1996).
