Lawrence grew up in Pennsylvania and is of Italian descent. His father Joseph Lawrence Mignogna, Sr. worked as an insurance broker, his mother Donna Mignogna, who is a former elementary school teacher, is a Manager. The family name was changed during his childhood to "Lawrence". In addition, he has two younger brothers who are also actors, Andrew and Matthew.
In 1994 he graduated from the Abington Friends School in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. He then studied at the University of Southern California.
Like his brothers also began Joey in childhood with acting, first in commercials. At age five he had made an appearance on The Tonight Show for the first time. After he Spoons guest appearances had in the TV series Diff'rent Strokes and Silver, he belonged to the solid cast members of the sitcom Gimme a Break by 1983 until 1987. He was the voice of Oliver in the Disney film Oliver & Co in 1988 and also was from 1991 through the presentation of Joey Russo in the comedy series Blossom star.
From 1995 he worked for three years to see along with his brothers in the series Brotherly Love. In some episodes he also directed. On the big screen it was rare to see an exception to the film Urban Legends 2 from the year 2000. In May 2007, he played the lead role in the Broadway Muscial Chicago (Musical) as Billy Flynn. Two years later, Lawrence starred opposite Melissa Joan Hart in the TV movie My Fake Fiancé. Since 2010, both also play in the sitcom Melissa & Joey the lead roles.
In 1993, when Lawrence was gerademal age 16, he released his debut album, Joey Lawrence, which was also placed in the U.S. Billboard 200 and the UK album charts. The album containing the single Nothin ' My Love Can not Fix was used as the closing credits theme song for the movie Cop and a Half. The single also made it to the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart.
In 1997, he released his second music album Soul Mates, but this album was less successful than the first. The single Never Gonna Change My Mind could be placed for one week in the Top 50 in the UK Singles Chart.
Joey married in 2002 Michelle Vella, but they divorced three years later. In July 2005 he married Chandie Yawn - Nelson, with whom he has two daughters so far.
