Johan August Brinell

Johan ( n ) August Brinell ( born November 21, 1849 in Bringetofta at Nässjö, † November 17, 1925 in Stockholm) was a Swedish engineer. His birthday is incorrectly specified with June 21, 1849, his year of death even with 1929.

Brinell began his professional career at the iron works in Lesjöfors. In 1882 he became chief engineer of the Fagersta - iron works and 1903-1914 Chief Engineer at Jernkontoret.

He developed named after him hardness tests with ball pressure test, which was presented in 1900 at the Paris World Exhibition. The melting shown there in 1500 were the basis for systematic studies on the influence of alloying elements carbon, silicon and manganese on the hardness of steel. The measurement method was also used after determining the appropriate correlations to determine the strength. From 1902 Brinell was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
