Johan Christian Fabricius

Johann Christian Fabricius ( born January 7, 1745 in Tønder (Schleswig ); † March 3, 1808 in Kiel ) was a zoologist and an economist.

Life

The son of a doctor studied from 1762 to 1764 in Uppsala at Carl von Linné. He led the work of his teacher continued in Entomology ( Entomology ) and established a system of insects with special attention to the morphology of the mouthparts. After returning to Copenhagen, where his father worked, he increasingly devoted himself to the economics and thus he became a professor of economics at Naturaltheather in Copenhagen ( 1768).

After this institution was merged with the University of Copenhagen, it was a chair as ao Professor offered. 1776, he was appointed the University of Kiel as professor of economics and natural and Kameralwissenschaften. His wife Cecilia ( née Ambrose ) he had married in 1771.

He undertook several scientific trips to France, England and Norway in order to expand his knowledge, especially of Entomology. So he came in 1767 for the first time to London, where he was able to use the collections of William Hunter for original descriptions of many insects, which he published in his work Systema entomologiae. Thus, the on Hunter insect collection contains around 400 holotypes, of which the majority of Fabricius has been described. However, some species could be by his friend, the French entomologist Guillaume Antoine Olivier (1756-1814) describes the visited London in 1789 and on the recommendation of Fabricius also examined the collections Hunters.

Fabricius was one of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina since 1794.
