Johan Ramstedt

Johan Olof Ramstedt ( born November 7, 1852 in Stockholm, † March 15, 1935 ) was a Swedish politician and Prime Minister.

Study and career

The son of a clothing manufacturer graduated from 1869 to 1873 a study of administrative law at the University of Uppsala. He was then Hospitant at Svea hovrätt in Stockholm. There he rose in 1880 as Deputy to fiscal 1882 and 1884 as Assistant to the ordinary judge.

In addition, he was from 1876 to 1877 Assessor in the office of the Second Chamber, the Reichstag from 1877 to 1882 in the office of the First Chamber. In 1892 he joined as counsel in the Justice Department, where he served as director of the highest-ranking official from 1896 to 1898. In 1898 he was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court appointed ( justitieråd ).

Political career

Minister and Prime Minister in 1905

On 5 July 1902 he was appointed by Prime Minister Erik Gustaf Boström as Minister without Portfolio. As such, he was in December 1904 Fifteen days of acting Foreign Minister.

Following the resignation of Boström due to the Union's crisis between Sweden and Norway Ramstedt was appointed on 13 April 1905 by Oscar II prime minister. Its important task was the settlement of the Union crisis. Together with Crown Prince Gustav, he developed a plan, which provided for the withdrawal of Norway from the State Union has existed since the Kiel Peace on January 14, 1814 without taking into account the interests of the Norwegians and their Parliament. For this plan, but not issued, since the Storting voted already on June 7, 1905 the resignation from the union with Sweden. The Government of Ramstedts then the Reichstag submitted proposal to enter into negotiations over the separation process was no majority. The Secret Committee, chaired by Christian Lundeberg, leader of the protectionists, rejected the suggestion of the government.

This led on August 2, 1905 resignation of the government Ramstedt, the first mass resignation of a Swedish government since 1809. Ramstedts successor was Lundeberg.

Subsequent offices

Lundeberg sat Ramstedt then again in his old office as Chief Justice a. In 1909 he was appointed by Prime Minister Arvid Lindman judge of the newly created Supreme Administrative Court ( Regeringsrätten ). In 1912 he was finally appointed by Prime Minister Charles Staaff the Supreme Governor ( överståthållare ) of the Stockholm County. This office he held until retirement in 1920.
