Johann Adolf of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg

Johann Adolf of Saxe- Gotha -Altenburg ( born May 18, 1721 Gotha, † April 29, 1799 in Friedrichstanneck ) was a prince from the branch line Saxe-Gotha -Altenburg and the Electorate of Saxony Wettin Ernestine of lieutenant general.

Life

Johann Adolf was the youngest son of Duke Frederick II of Saxe- Gotha -Altenburg (1676-1732) from his marriage to Magdalena Augusta (1679-1740), daughter of Prince Karl Wilhelm von Anhalt- Zerbst. The Prince was formed in 1735 in Geneva and entered 1739 in the Danish military service. 1743 he moved to Saxon services, was built in 1744 a regiment of 1682 established Kursächsische Infantry Regiment No.. 3, which he commanded himself to 1746, and fought in the battle of Hohenfriedberg. In 1753 he became general of the infantry and later Lieutenant General Electorate of Saxony.

Shortly after the beginning of the Seven Years' War, he got 1756 in Altenburg, in Prussian captivity. He was re- released after he promised to no longer want to fight against Prussia. His infantry regiment was transferred to the Prussian Army.

He retired to Eisenberg and settled here in 1756 Castle Friedrichstanneck build. Since 1789 he was a senior Ernestine the house, which he held the office Oldisleben. He is buried in the Castle Church Eisenberger.
