Johann Amman

Johann Amman ( born December 22, 1707 Schaffhausen, † December 14 1740 in St. Petersburg) was a Swiss physician and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Amman ".

Life

The son of the physicist Johann Jakob Amman studied from 1727 to 1729 medicine and botany at the University of Leiden, where he received his doctorate for Dr. med. In 1730 he was overseer of the Museum of Hans Sloane in London. From 1733 to 1740 he was professor of botany and natural history at the Imperial Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. From 1731 he was a member of the Royal Society of London. Amman laid in 1736 in St. Petersburg academic botanical garden on. He also left behind an extensive herbarium, which was acquired after his death by the Academy.

Ammann except smaller treatises began a thorough critical exposition of rare Russian plants with good pictures and leave as a fragment.
