Johann Andreas Naumann

Johann Andreas Naumann ( born April 13, 1744 Ziebigk in Köthen; † May 15, 1826 ) was an important German ornithologist.

Life

Johann Andreas Naumann came from a family of farmers who owned an estate in Ziebigk. At the age of 15 he lost his father and had to leave school to go to his mother in the management of this property at hand. His father and grandfather were interested in catching birds; he himself led in field work always with a shotgun. In addition to hunting the birds he was interested but also their appearance and their behavior. Johann Andreas Naumann was the father of Johann Friedrich Naumann and Carl Andreas Naumann and possibly another son.

Others

The Naumann bird collection, which was initiated by Johann Andreas Naumann and continued by Johann Friedrich Naumann, Naumann is now in the Museum in Köthen. It is the only known natural history collection of the Biedermeier period, which has been preserved in its original lineup. The Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni ) was named by Johann Gottlieb Naumann Fleischer after. The Naumann (Turdus naumanni ) was named after Johann Andreas Naumann.
