Johann August Ephraim Goeze

Johann August Ephraim Goeze ( born May 28, 1731 in Aschersleben, † June 27, 1793 in Quedlinburg ) was a German pastor and zoologist.

Goeze studied from 1747 to 1751 Theology at the University of Halle. From 1755 he was a theologian in Quedlinburg, 1762. Than pastor at St. Blasius Church in Quedlinburg 1786, he was Hofdiakon at the collegiate church.

He is the brother of the Lutheran theologian Johann Melchior Goeze ( 1717-1786 ).

In 1772, he discovered the tardigrades ( Tardigrada ). In his 1782 published work attempt at a natural history of intestinal worms of animal body he described the scolices in the cyst of animals, and compared them to the first zoologist with the " heads " of adult tapeworms. So he laid one of the foundation stones for decades later obtained by other researchers finding that the tapeworms go through a development cycle with a change of host, and that some cysts in organs of animals and humans by tapeworms, the Echinococcus are caused.

In some works the name Goeze is printed as " Idol " and thus often quoted in this form (eg to tape 2-3 of " Essays on the History of Insects" ).

The city of Quedlinburg named in his honor as a road Goezestraße.
