Johann Benedict Listing

Johann Benedict Listing ( born July 25, 1808 in Frankfurt am Main, † December 24, 1882 in Göttingen ) was a German mathematician.

He studied mathematics and architecture at the University of Göttingen, however, had a much wider range of interests, including geomagnetism and physiological optics. He received his Ph.D. in 1834 in Göttingen. Then he made a three -year journey with Wolfgang Sartorius von Walter Hausen, to investigate the volcanic activity of Mount Etna in Sicily. In 1837 he became a teacher of drawing machines, of mechanical engineering and applied mathematics at the Higher Trade School of Hannover, 1839 Associate Professor of Physics and 1849 professor of mathematics in Göttingen.

Through his mentor Carl Friedrich Gauss Listing started to specialize in the topology, which was still called at that time analysis situs. He wrote in 1847 with the preliminary studies on the topology of a textbook on topology, in which he had used this term ten years earlier in his letters. Through this book, the term passed into general use.

Regardless of August Ferdinand Möbius discovered in 1858 listing the specific properties of the Möbius strip.

In 1861 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen.
