Johann Christian Brand

Johann Christian Brand (* November 15, 1722 in Vienna, † June 12, 1795 ) was an Austrian landscape painter, draftsman, etcher and engraver.

Life

He was the son of the landscape painter Christian God help fire (* Frankfurt ( Oder) in 1695, † in Vienna in 1750 ) and the elder brother of the well as a landscape painter, a student, a member and later as a professor at the Imperial Hofakademie active Friedrich August Brand. His second younger brother was the Austrian / German painter Carl Heinrich Brand ( born November 11, 1724 in Vienna, † May 6, 1787 in Munich).

Brand studied from 1736 at the Vienna Academy, where he was in 1766 appointed painter to the court. In 1772, he became a professor in landscape drawing at the Vienna Academy. Was particularly pronounced his feelings for scenic natural beauty. Equally significant are his detailed depictions of the architecture, the fine design with vibrant and color-coordinated staffages is particularly noteworthy. He is considered the first landscape painter who so captured the reality that he can be described as the father of the Austrian landscape painting of the 19th century. His art forms the transition from the Baroque to the landscape view of the 19th century. His pictures have already found great success in his lifetime and are located next to Vienna in galleries in Germany, France, England and Russia.

In 1876 (2nd district) was named after him in the fire lane Vienna Leopoldstadt.

Work, reception

A special feature in the work of Johann Christian Brands represent 16 oil paintings, which are now in the permanent collection of the Vienna Museum of Military History ( Room II ). It involves representations of the cavalry at the time of Maria Theresa, using as template a copper engraving series by Jacob Matthias Schmutzer served, which was published in 1768. In these oil paintings is charming landscape backgrounds connect with exact reproduction of the adjustment.
