Johann Christian Josef Abs

Johann Christian Josef Abs ( born August 26, 1781 Wipperfuerth, † April 15, 1823 in Königsberg ) was a German pedagogue.

Life

Abs came from a Roman Catholic home and put 1799 in the Franciscan monastery to Hamm under the religious name of Theodosius the monk vows. After his training he became in 1806 head of the monastery school at Halberstadt. Here he taught children without distinction according to the state, religion and gender, and approached to the methods of the Swiss pedagogue Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi. In 1810 he left the monastery to announce the establishment of its own educational institution in Halberstadt. In 1811 he completed the foundation and released the font display my application of Pestalozzi 's educational method. In 1813 he switched from Catholic to Protestant denomination and let women teach his institution. A former assistant he took to wife.

At his school, a nursing home for needy children, a preschool and a day care center were affiliated. After Abs in 1815 adopted the orphanage in the country, he combined it with his elementary school and a teacher training college. His teaching methods were observed throughout the country. In 1818 he followed a call to Königsberg to the director of the Royal orphanage. Here he died in 1823 at the age of 42 years.
