Johann Christoph Pezel

Johann Christoph Pezel ( born December 5, 1639 Glatz, † October 13, 1694 in Bautzen ) was a German town piper and composer.

Other spellings of the name were: Pezelius, Betzel, Betzeld, Petzold, Petzel or Bässel.

Pezel had demonstrated in 1664 in Leipzig as an art Geiger. In 1669 he was town piper. From 1672 he directed the Collegium Musicum. 1675 and 1679 he applied unsuccessfully for a job as a musician Council in Dresden. Also an application for the proposed 1677 Thomaskantorat fail. In 1681 he was finally Town Musicians in Bautzen. Pezels compositions are in the tradition of the older German suites. The melodies often have French and Italian influences.
