Johann Christoph Volkamer

Johann Christoph Volkamer (* June 7, 1644; † August 26, 1720 ) was a German merchant, manufacturer and botanist.

Life

In Volkamers time you looked in the citrus fruits, the "Golden Apples of the Hesperides " of Greek mythology. From the late 17th century it was to European courts fashion to cultivate citrus plants in orangeries. The expensive by transport across the Alps and coveted trees developed for status and power symbol.

With this work, the term " Hesperides " became a symbol of the flourishing garden Nuremberg culture that lasted from about 1650 until the end of the 18th century.

In two volumes (a third came on precursors not beyond ) the detailed illustrations of different species and varieties of citrus plants, including their fruits with the representation of Nuremberg landscapes and gardens, as well as vistas of numerous Italian cities and gardens are connected by Volkamers book. Volkamers factory provides with its high-quality engravings and detailed travel reports, an important contemporary historical source dar.

The Volkamer Lemon Citrus volkameriana V. Ten. & Pasq. is named in his honor.
