Johann Daniel Titius

Johann Daniel Titius (also: Tietz, Tietze, born January 2, 1729 Konitz, † December 11, 1796 in Wittenberg ) was a German astronomer, physicist and biologist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Titius ".

Life

Initially, he attended school in his hometown. After the early death of his father Titius was brought up by his uncle Hanov, who was professor in Gdansk and moved into the local high school. After attending high school in Gdansk, he began his studies at the University of Leipzig, where he became in 1752 the degree of Master of Arts and was accepted as a lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy. 1756 he took over at the University of Wittenberg as professor of the lower mathematics and took over 1761 public lectures on physics for the absent from Wittenberg Georg Matthias Bose on. Since Bose no longer recurred, Titius was applied physics professor by the Polish king and Saxon Elector.

He became in 1767 an honorary member of the Leipzig Economic Societät.

Today he is best known for the development of a formula from 1766, which mathematically describes a certain regularity in the average distances of the planets from the Sun and is known as the Titius - Bode series.

He also wrote in just one year (1753-1754) a German translation of the total Essais of Michel de Montaigne, long considered the best was recognized, at least until 1998, when the new translation of Hans stiletto appeared.

In honor of Johann Daniel Titius of asteroid (1998) Titius was named after him.
