Johann Flierl

Johann Flierl ( born April 16, 1858 in Buchhof at Fürnried, now the town Birgland, Upper Palatinate, † September 30, 1947 in Neuendettelsau ) was a German missionary and founder of the Neuendettelsauer Mission in New Guinea.

After the northeastern part of the island of New Guinea had become a German colony in 1885 (Kaiser -Wilhelms -Land), in 1886 he founded a mission station at Simbang at Finschhafen. Flierl remained until 1930 in New Guinea. Until that time, 18 mission stations and 25,000 Christians emerged were baptized.

Today the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea, with 815,000 members, the largest Protestant church in the Pacific.
