Johann Friedrich Schannat

Johann Friedrich Schannat ( born July 23, 1683 Luxembourg, † March 6, 1739 in Heidelberg ) was a German priest and lawyer, who worked as a historian in Fulda, Mainz and Prague.

Life and work

Johann Friedrich Schannat was born on July 23, 1683 in Luxembourg, the son of a Frankish physician. He studied at the University of Leuven law and canon law and has been a lawyer with 22 years in Parliament in Mechelen. In 1707 he wrote his first historical publication "The History of the Counts of Mansfeld ." According to another study of theology, he was ordained a Catholic priest in 1709 and had to 1714 a canonry in Liege held.

Historian in Fulda, Mainz and Prague

After study trips to Paris and at various university libraries in 1722 he accepted an appointment as historian of the Bishopric of Fulda by the local ruling families Konstantin von Buttlar ( 1679-1726 ). He worked here in several writings the history of the Bishopric and its possessions, and earned a reputation as a good historian. 1729 appointed the Archbishop of Mainz, Franz Ludwig of the Palatinate ( 1664-1732 ) Schannat into his service and commissioned him to create a history of the diocese of Worms, whose officials he was. The Archbishop of Prague, Johann Moritz Gustav von Manderscheid - Blankenheim (1676-1763) brought Schannat 1734 to his court. There, the renowned scholar should write a history of the Counts of Manderscheid. From his employer Schannat 1735 a three-year stay in Italy was funded. Posthumous publications
