Johann Gabriel Seidl

Johann Gabriel Seidl ( born June 21, 1804 in Vienna, † July 18, 1875 ) was an Austrian archaeologist, poet, storyteller and playwright. He was the librettist of the Austrian imperial anthem " God save, God defend our Emperor, our country! ". Some works he published under the pseudonym Emil Ledie.

Life

Johann Gabriel Seidl was the son of a lawyer and attended the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna. He then studied law. In 1829, he eventually became a secondary school teacher in untersteierischen Cilli. From the year 1840, Johann Gabriel Seidl curator of the coin and antique cabinet in Vienna. In the years 1856-1871 he was responsible for the treasury.

In addition to his scientific studies Johann Gabriel Seidl published numerous poems and short stories, including the first poems by Nikolaus Lenau. Many of his poems were by Franz Schubert (eg Pigeon Post ) and Carl Loewe ( The clock, for example ) set to music. In addition to high German Johann Gabriel Seidl poems also wrote several verses in the Lower Austrian dialect.

He is buried in a grave of honor in Vienna's Central Cemetery (Group 0, number 1, number 10). In 1876 in Vienna Landstrasse (3rd district) was named the Seidlgasse after him.
