Johann Georg Kohl

Johann Georg Kohl ( born April 28, 1808 in Bremen, † October 28, 1878 ) was a German travel writer and librarian in the city of Bremen.

Biography

Kohl was the son of a wine merchant. He attended the Old School in Bremen and studied law at Göttingen University, the University of Heidelberg and the University of Munich. After the death of his father he had to drop out of college in 1830 penniless. He was then for six years as a tutor in Courland. After he had traveled to St. Petersburg, Moscow and southern Russia, he lived from 1838 some time in Dresden. Here he wrote his first Russian trip reports. From Dresden he traveled then almost all European countries and described his experiences. From 1850 he was in Berlin, Paris, London and Oxford, and prepared his travel to the U.S. before.

From 1853 to 1858 toured North America carbon. In 1858 he returned to Bremen. It dealt with the cultural history of Bremen and wrote about the house marine, Ratskeller, cooperation of Bremen and Riga and the chronicler Johann Renner. He also gave up the Northwest German sketches and episodes from the cultural and artistic history of Bremen. In 1863 he was appointed to the city in Bremen librarian and thereby entrusted with a task that he perceived very committed.

Honors

  • Kohl received an honorary doctorate from the University of Königsberg and the University of Boston.
  • The Johann Georg Kohl-Straße in Bremen Arsten was named after him.
