Johann Gottfried Eichhorn

Johann Gottfried Eichhorn (* October 16, 1752 in Dörrenzimmern in the Principality of Hohenlohe- Öhringen, † June 25, 1827 in Göttingen ) was an Orientalist and historian, and is calculated to the group of supernatural rationalists of the time.

Life

Eichhorn studied in Göttingen, was rector at Ohrdruf, in 1775 professor of oriental languages ​​at Jena and 1788 to Göttingen, where he read including on the political history of ancient and modern times and about literary history. In Göttingen, he was co-director in 1813 of the Royal Society of Sciences, 1819 Privy Councillor and died on 25 June 1827. Among his students were the later Orientalist Friedrich Wilken and Tibetologist Sándor Csoma.
