Johann Gottfried Schicht

Johann Gottfried layer ( born September 29, 1753 Reichenau ( Sachsen), † February 16, 1823 in Leipzig ) was a German composer, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and choirmaster.

Life

Layer studied law in Leipzig from 1776. He worked as accompanist and violinist in concerts organized by Hiller ( Grand Concert ), and later at the Leipzig Gewandhaus with. In 1785 he took over the position of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. A year later he married Constanza Alessandra Octavia Valdesturia who already died three years later. Of the four entstamme flowing from the marriage daughters died early on to Henriette Wilhelmine three. Johann Gottfried layer was also music director of the New Church, and in 1802 co-founder and first director of the Leipzig Academy of Music.

The location of the Gewandhaus Orchestra he held until 1810. Then he was up to his death in 1823 Thomas cantor. One of his pupils was the composer Carl Gottlieb Hering.
