Johann Gottlob Lehmann (scientist)

Johann Gottlob Lehmann ( * August 4, 1719 in Langenhennersdorf, .. † 11 Januarjul / January 22 1767greg in Saint Petersburg ) was a German mineralogist and geologist.

Life

Johann Gottlob was the son of the manor farmer Martin Gottlob Lehmann ( † 1729 ). He studied from 1738 at the University of Leipzig, from 1739 at the University of Wittenberg. 1741, he was awarded his doctorate for Dr. med. After that, he lived in Dresden. Inspired by the Saxon mining he led in addition to his medical work increasingly through geological research.

From 1750 he worked in Berlin, where he was appointed mining engineer and was accepted into the Royal Academy of Sciences, 1754. Lehmann was the first geologist, the strengths and storage sequences of rock strata was reviewing and recorded. In his work, attempt a history of Flötz - Gebürgen, concerning their origin, location, therein contained metals, minerals and fossils (1756 ), he is considered the founder of stratigraphy. 1761, he accepted an appointment as Professor of Chemistry and Director of the Imperial Naturalienkabinett to St. Petersburg. In the same year Lehmann discovered in the Urals an orange - red chromate mineral ( PbCrO4 ), which he called red lead ore.
