Johann Gottlob Theaenus Schneider

Johann Gottlob Theaenus Schneider ( born January 18, 1750 in Collm; † January 12, 1822 in Breslau) was a German classical scholar and naturalist.

Life

Schneider studied in Leipzig, Göttingen, and Strasbourg, and was in 1774 on the recommendation of Christian Gottlob Heyne ( 1729-1812 ), the secretary of the then very prestigious classical scholar Richard François Philippe Strasbourg Brunck ( 1729-1803 ). Soon after, he became professor of eloquence and Philology at the University of Frankfurt (Oder) and corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, and in 1809 the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

The most important work was his critical Greek- German Concise Dictionary (1797 ), the first independent work by Robert Estienne ( 1503-1559 ) Thesaurus Linguae Latinae ( 1576-78 ) and the basis Franz Ludwig Carl Friedrich Passow ( 1786-1833 ) Opuscula Academica ( 1835) and all the Greek lexicons. Especially Eight put Schneider in his work on the inclusion of scientific and natural history words and phrases. He was also interested very much for scientific manuscripts and publications of older authors.

In 1801, Schneider published a revised and completed edition Marcus Eliezer Bloch ( 1723-1799 ) Systema Ichthyologiae iconibus ex illustratum, a time among scientists very important catalog on fish as a taxonomic standard work. But not only with fish ( ichthyology ), but also with paleontology and especially with turtles and other reptiles and amphibians ( Herpetology ) dealt Schneider. In 1799, Schneider described for the first time often occurring in India black scars toad ( Bufo melanostictus ) and occurring in the southern U.S. Green Treefrog (Hyla cinerea).

At the University of Breslau, he became in 1811 Professor of Ancient Languages ​​and eloquence, where he was chief librarian of the University Library in 1814 and 1816 before taking over the post of chief librarian. He remained active there until his death in 1822.
